Chapel at the Y

John 2:13-17

As I was looking through clothes to wear to an interview at the Y, I looked over and saw the remnants of a chapel. The entire room was filled with dressy business attire, but tucked away like a lost archaeological site was a wooden alter facing rows of pews. It was dusty and cobwebs were woven in its corners. The finish on the wooden pews was dull and faded. It struck me with dismay how this holy place was treated with such disrespect. It reminded me of Jesus anger when he went into the Temple and found it filled with merchants selling their wares, including cattle. I was feeling more sadness than anger at that point, but later it swelled into anger. As I thought about the original mission of the Y and how the message of Christ had been watered down to just a letter in a well known name. How many people actually know the C stands for Christian?!

This paradox happens to other “Christian” organizations who have lost their true focus and reason for being. It can happen in our lives too, as we stray from the center of God’s will for our lives. Are we as passionate about spreading the Gospel as we were when first saved? Has our true purpose been watered down and tucked away in a dark corner for it to gather dust and deteriorate until it has no meaning?

Lord, brush off the dust in my Spirit, help me to sweep clean the cobwebs that have gathered in my heart. Rub a fresh coat of wax to restore the shine so I will be used by you. Make me a new person again and give me the mission I once had. In Jesus name, I pray.
