Familiar with all your ways

I think I know all about my husband after being married for almost 20 years. I know when he usually wakes up and goes to sleep. I can discern his mood, whether happy or sad or mad. When his brows are furrowed, which doesn’t happen often, watch out. I know it’s not the time to ask for a favor.

He’s an expert on classic rock and roll and has memorized many of the titles and names of musicians. Names of popular movies and their actors and actresses are on the tip of his tongue. He even has a few renowned friends on twitter that he chats with. Just in conversation if a topic causes instant recall of a song or movie, he’ll burst into song or name the movie.

I listen to his adventures at the grocery store and what birds are frequenting our bird feeders. He would make a good policeman or security guard as he observes the neighbors. He even knows the cars they drive and notices anything unusual happening. If there’s a policeman or fire truck, out come the binoculars. He’s the best Neighborhood Watch person ever.

He dreams of being a stand-up comedian and I like most of his jokes. His thoughts are like most of ours and what our next meal will be. I’m familiar with his favorite foods and often hear of his Mom’s cooking. I’m a good cook and he raves about my meals. Nothing beats a man’s memory of his Mom’s meals, however. I know that he likes Hellmann’s mayo instead of Miracle Whip. He snubs his nose at tuna unless I make tuna salad. Anchovies on pizza are the best. He likes fresh mushrooms, not canned.

He also thinks a lot about his boyhood home. His parents operated a motel on Route 66. I heard all about the events with people coming and going. I’ve heard some interesting stories about the characters.

This reminds me of God knowing us better than we know ourselves. He knows what we’re thinking even before the thought enters our minds. He is familiar with all our ways, our sleeping habits, our ways of doing housework, our attitudes and the desires of our hearts. His love for us is infinite and immeasurable. So, if you think you know your loved one, it doesn’t come close to God’s knowledge and love for them.

This is written about in the Bible in Psalm 139:1-6:

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me.You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. You comprehend my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways, For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O Lord, you know it all together. You have hedged me behind and before and laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain it.” NKJV

Prayer: O Lord, I’m so thankful for your knowledge and love of us. You know what is best for us. Thank you for your protection and guidance. You are with us wherever we go. You think of us constantly. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
