God Protected My Tent
Read Psalm 91:1-16
“If you say, ‘The Lord is my refuge,’ and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. Psalm 91:9-10 NIV
In May of 1982, my first husband and I were tent camping close to Marion, IL in the southern part of the state. It was a hot day and we pitched our tent in the early afternoon. We were starting to prepare a meal because we hadn’t had lunch when the wind started to pick up and dark clouds formed in the sky. The winds picked up and we moved our camping stove into the entryway of the tent and continued cooking. We made sure to have enough ventilation by keeping the doorway flap open. It wasn’t long before the winds were fierce and our tent was flapping and swaying. It was a huge 6-8 man tent and the posts were securely in place. We were beginning to worry when we thought we saw the formation of a funnel cloud in the distance. I prayed to God for protection. It seemed like an eternity before the winds died down and we were able to relax.
The next morning we packed up and drove to Marion to survey the damage. Sure enough, there had been a tornado and the town was devastated. According to Wikipedia, an F4 tornado swept through and destroyed an apartment complex and severely damaged three shopping centers. The tornado killed 10 people and left 1,000 people homeless. We saw the entire side of a motel torn off with the furniture still intact in the rooms. The disaster was devastating. It was amazing that the tornado had not come our way. I’m sure my Mom had also prayed for us as she did every day. I can’t help but believe our prayers were heard by the Lord and He kept us safe. Although I had not turned my life over to Him completely at that time, I know He still loved me and watched over me. The Bible verse about the Lord not allowing disaster to come near our tent certainly applies here. I keep this verse written on a postcard on my refrigerator to remind me of God’s protection during this Covid-19 pandemic.
God talks about his deliverance from plagues in Psalm 91:1- 3, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ Surely, he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.
Just as God saved us from the tornado destroying our tent, He will protect our house and keep us from getting COVID, according to HIs will. He has the power to heal those that are sick, for He is the Divine Healer.
Prayer: O Lord, this COVID virus is scary for so many of us in our nation and the world. Thank you for reminding us that we can take refuge in you. Help us to trust in you for protection. Keep us from being afraid. Although many people have died, you have not allowed those of us reading this to perish. We pray for complete healing of those sick with the virus and that you will help us find an effective vaccine. We know you will still be faithful to us no matter what happens. Thank you for watching over us. In Jesus name, we pray. Amen.
